We gave you a lot of information regarding reconditioning different types of batteries. I hope that this information is valuable for you and you will get some use out of it. Here, we have prepared a short summary of all items that you may need for reconditioning with description and actual prices from Amazon. So, let’s get started!

Multimeter

multimeterPrice: from $2.73
Use in reconditioning: Any battery, to check whether it is dead or not.
Description: This thing is a must have, even if you are not interested in reconditioning. It is very handy for different purposes, whether you are professional electrician or just decided to repair a simple electrical appliance.
We use a multimeter to check the battery, if it needs to be reconditioned, also the device is used during the restoration to raise the level voltage up to the number we need.
How to choose: Before purchasing, check its accuracy, the measuring error of the good one varies from 0,025 to 3 percent.
Replacement: Simple tester which is not so functional, but still works

Resistor

resistorsPrice: from $0.01
Use in reconditioning: Cell phone batteries
Description: A resistor limits or regulates the flow of electrical current in an electronic circuit. Resistors can also be used to provide a specific voltage for an active device such as a transistor.
We employ a resistor while we recondition cell phone batteries. The thing is when we restore a cell phone battery, we connect it directly to a charger, while when it is charged inside a mobile phone the current goes through the controller. So we need a resistor to limit a voltage, otherwise we would damage the battery giving it too much current.
How to choose: Before purchasing, check the resistance – in our case it should not be more than 300 Ohm.
Replacement: –

Charger

chargerPrice: $5.
Use in reconditioning: Cell phone batteries
Description: In our case any charger would work. The point is that we use the charger in pair with a resistor which limits the voltage, so you don’t have to be scared that the charger would damage your battery.
For example, you can use your old cell phone battery charger, which you don’t need anymore. You just need to cut wires to attach them directly to the battery terminals.
How to choose: If you consider buying a new one, it’s better to have a universal one, because you will be able to use it with different devices after.
Replacement: Any charger

Copper

copperPrice: from $3.
Use in reconditioning: Laptop battery
Description: We use copper for repairing a laptop battery for soldering autobulbs for voltage check. This task is quite simple and to perform it we don’t need the best model on the market. You can even buy a USB powered model, especially if you have a plug adapter with an USB port.
How to choose: To work with a copper, you need resin colophony and a solder bath. So I think the best option for you is buying a set containing all you may need.
Replacement: There are many ways to replace a copper. You can try a very simple construction consisting of a lighter and a paperclip.

Autobulbs

autobulbsPrice: from $8.
Use in reconditioning: Laptop battery
Description: Batteries indicate whether the battery element has charge or not.
How to choose: Capacity of a battery should not be higher than 21 W.
Replacement: Any lamp of this capacity would be fine. Generally the capacity of lamps used in light fixtures starts from 35 W. That is why it is more convenient to use autobulbs.

Cyanoacrylate adhesive

cyanoacrylate-adhesivePrice: from $4.
Use in reconditioning: Laptop battery
Description: The adhesive is used for assembling the battery after finishing its restoration. High temperature of the battery and the chemical reactions going on inside don’t let us use regular glue.
How to choose: Looking for the adhesive, choose the flexible one with little curing time.
Replacement: –

Paper cutter

cutter-knifePrice: from $4.
Use in reconditioning: Laptop battery
Description: The item is quite handy for cutting the battery housing to take out the internal elements. For this purpose a regular knife with a thin razor will suit just fine.
How to choose: Choose the knife with a thin blade and practical handle.
Replacement: It’s up to you, you can use any knife or blade to cut the battery housing, it’s just a matter of taste. For instance, you can use a shaving razor blade.

Portable power bank

power-bankPrice: $40-90.
Use in reconditioning: Car battery
Description: The device helps you to start a car if your battery died.
How to choose: The amperage of a power bank should be enough to start your engine. In general, 150A will be enough to start a vehicle with engine capacity up to 2.5 liters. The power bank can be used not only for starting a car, but for different not-related purposes, for example for charging a mobile phone. The bigger capacity it has, the better it is.
Replacement: You can use cables for jump start, see below.

Jump start kit

jump-start-kitPrice: from $9.
Use in reconditioning: Car battery
Description: It helps you to start a car if your battery died with the use of another car.
How to choose: The output voltage of the cables should not be lower than 9 V, and the wire section should not be less than 16 square millimeters.
Replacement: You can make cables for a jump start yourself using a copper wire, but you should be very careful working with electricity.

Sandpaper

sandpaperPrice: from $1.
Use in reconditioning: Car battery
Description: The item is used before reconditioning a car battery when you have to clean the terminals. This task cannot be performed without good sandpaper or metal brush.
How to choose: Choose quite thin sandpaper or not too much harsh brush.
Replacement: You can use a grinding sponge or metal brush, it’s pretty the same, but sometimes more convenient.

Distilled water

distilled-waterPrice: from $10/gal.
Use in reconditioning: Car battery
Description: Distilled water is used for restoring the capacity of a car battery in that part when you need to fill up the electrolyte level. You cannot just put water from the tap – water impurities will ruin your battery.
How to choose: No special requirements, just choose whatever suits your budget.
Replacement: –

Hydrometer

hydrometerPrice: $3-15
Use in reconditioning: Car battery
Description: You will need a hydrometer to check specific gravity of electrolyte in a car battery. A hydrometer is usually made of glass, and consists of a cylindrical stem and a bulb weighted with mercury or lead shot to make it float upright.
How to choose: The hydrometer should have the wide range scale with high accuracy, also a built-in thermometer will be a big advantage.
Replacement: –

Gloves

glovesPrice: $4-5
Use in reconditioning: Car battery
Description: Gloves are used to protect your hands from acid when you work with the car battery’s electrolyte.
How to choose: Mind that acid is very harmful for your skin, so you need really solid protective rubber gloves.
Replacement: –

Goggles

gogglesPrice: from $1
Use in reconditioning: Car battery
Description: Goggles are the must working with car battery acid. It is very harmful and getting into your eyes can damage a serious trauma.
How to choose: Choose reliable, sound goggles that can protect you from an accident
Replacement: –

Awl

awlPrice: $2
Use in reconditioning: Consumer batteries
Description: Awl is quite handy when working on consumer batteries reconditioning, because in that case you need to do holes in the battery for pouring liquid in it.
How to choose: For AA batteries you will need very thin awl.
Replacement: Thick and long sewing needle, jeweler screwdriver or just a sharp nail

Syringe

syringePrice: less than $1
Use in reconditioning: Consumer batteries
Description: Syringe is needed to pour water through the battery hole during the reconditioning process of a consumer battery.
How to choose: Any syringe from pharmacy will be just fine. I would recommend you to use an insulinic one, because its needle is very thin.
Replacement: –

Resin

resinPrice: up to $10
Use in reconditioning: Consumer batteries
Description: Without resin you won’t be able to seal the AA battery back after reconditioning. Most of resins are epoxy based and used for cracks sealing, although they can be suitable for our task as well.
How to choose: It can be used with batteries, contact with alkaline should be possible .
Replacement: Many kinds of industrial clay would work for this purpose, although almost all of them have epoxy as an active ingredient.
